I hope I don’t sound like that when I’m a teacher…

Hi Danielle,

I am a former ECMP student of Alec’s and currently a first year teacher. I saw your post and wanted to let you know that you bring up a very important issue surrounding the idea of “teacher talk” in the classroom. I did my major research project on topic following my internship and really dug deep into how, as teachers, the way we use our talk in our classroom can affect the identities our students assume. A great resource is Choice Words by Peter H. Johnston if you’re interested in the topic, it is really neat and really makes you think about the power our words have as a teacher.

Thanks so much for your comment and I will be sure to get my hands on that book!

I think we all hope that we don’t sound like that. The way we talk and express ourselves is extremely important in our classroom!!!
