Here is a list of twenty things you can expect to see, hear, and experience in my classroom:

  1. An understanding that everyone has the right to learn and succeed, regardless of race, ethnicity, culture, religion, gender, age, disability, or socioeconomic status.
  2. A classroom community that provides constant love and care for everyone.
  3. A dedicated teacher who differentiates instruction to attend to students’ unique ways of learning and progressing.
  4. Learners who are engaged and interested to learn more about the world around them.
  5. A sense of belonging in which everyone can feel valued for their own strengths and talents.
  6. An acceptance and appreciation for diversity while understanding the concept of “equity”.
  7. Kind words and actions that show empathy and consideration for others’ feelings.
  8. Responsibility of students to complete their own work and make positive choices.
  9. Routines and procedures that keep everyone focused and comfortable during activities, transition times, and special events.
  10. Learning opportunities that foster students’ holistic development – physically, mentally, socially, emotionally, and behaviourally.
  11. Interdisciplinary connections made among subject areas and throughout the curriculum.
  12. Authentic hands-on activities that allow students to exhibit creativity and discover their own knowledge.
  13. Direct, indirect, interactive, independent, and experiential learning opportunities for all students.
  14. A positive and organized classroom environment that displays unit and lesson themes.
  15. Open and honest communication with parents, with a need for their involvement in their child’s learning.
  16. Shelves and cupboards full of children’s books and novels from a variety of genres.
  17. Music that signals the beginning and end of the day, including most transition times.
  18. Showcasing of students’ work on bulletin boards and in the hallway.
  19. Student-led conferences that allow learners to present their own work, strengths, and areas needing growth.
  20. A community of individuals who love to learn and have fun!
