Philosophy of Education

Plan for the success of every child…

Each child is a unique individual made in God’s image and deserving of the best possible education.  As a teacher, it is important that I am aware of students’ strengths, needs, and interests.  Differentiated instruction must be used to attend to students’ unique ways of learning about the world around them.  This way, the content can be made accessible and meaningful for all students, and they can be given the opportunity to reach their fullest potential.

Foster students’ holistic development…

Children are people with social, emotional, behavioural, and physical needs.  Academic content must meet these needs, and I have to ensure that children can grow in a safe and supportive school atmosphere.  It is also important that I stimulate students’ five senses, so that they can gain a true appreciation of the world around them.  Their world can best be understood through authentic learning experiences, risk-taking, and the sharing of ideas.

Create a nurturing community that promotes the teachings of Jesus Christ…

Students need to learn how to develop a caring, equitable, and loving attitude for themselves and for others.  I must encourage them to make the right choices and present myself as a suitable role model for their development.  This way, students can learn to live out the core Gospel values, pray and show empathy for others’ well-being, and help those in need.  The only way that this can occur is through a supportive and nurturing staff, friendly peer and parent interaction, a positive classroom environment, and explicit instruction of the foundational Catholic teachings.

Give students the chance for self-discovery…

Children learn best by doing.  In other words, they construct knowledge when they make sense of their own ideas through the use of authentic materials.  Through cooperative and experiential learning opportunities, children can ask questions and find true meaning about the world around them.  As a teacher, it is my responsibility to make these student-centered experiences possible, by providing adequate time and space for learners to explore.

Provide active opportunities in and around the community…

Students are part of an ever-changing society.  They must be given many opportunities to get involved in the community, help those in need, and work with others to solve problems.  The young students of today are the critical thinkers of tomorrow.  I must foster the growth of reliable and responsible citizens who are aware of societal trends and issues.  Christian service opportunities allow students to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, and use their talents to make a difference in people’s lives.

Continue to learn and develop my professional identity…

I am a lifelong learner whose primary purpose is to attend to the learning needs of young children.  They are the future and I recognize that they deserve the very best.  It is in my best interest to keep up with the latest teaching methods, resources, and technologies that can serve students’ holistic development.  Students deserve a dedicated individual who is committed to providing a rich and meaningful Catholic education.  I know that I am such a person.
